I think the jury is still out on this. As far as .NET goes, I think it is a major step forward in web development. For Windows apps, however, I think this is one foot forward, and the other foot in reverse. Having worked within Visual Studio to make Windows apps, I find it very frustrating with what is NOT natively available that has been available in Delphi for years (action lists is one example). Try to put images on a menu and you'll find yourself resorting to owner draw or 3rd party solutions. I could go on and on with similar frustrations. The upshot is I expect (hope) D8 to make .NET more Delphi-like. If it does, it could be a good thing for developers.

Delphi 8 - leaping ahead from innovation to imitation

It's pretty clear from this demo, and from the previous "Open letter to the Delphi Community" in early October (among other things), that Delphi is no longer Borland's platform of choice for innovation or technology leadership. Instead, Borland has chosen the path of facilitating a migration from Delphi's world of VCL and Object Pascal into Microsoft's world of .NET. While this will help Borland retain developers in the short and mid-term, it means they've decided that Delphi will eventually cease to be a viable software development platform. (--- That such a decision was inevitable is a whole other discussion!)It's sad to see Delphi die a slow death, not unlike Foxpro's ongoing slow slide into oblivion (since 1996 or so). I'm sure Borland will continue for many years to maintain and enhance the product to support new tools and technologies, but only in response to innovations made elsewhere. I've been developing apps using some flavor or another of Turbo Pascal & Delphi since TP version 1.0 - 20 years ago - I still keep my original TP v. 1.0 manual here on my desk. Unfortunately, it's clear it's time to move myself and my development team on to another platform. We'll probably move up to D8, but that's the end of the road as far as I'm concerned.- Allen
