SideWinder + CLX on Linux?

Bringing Borland's best-in-class development tools to .NET is a very smart move - Anders Hejlsberg has done an excellent job defining C# and the .NET framework and Borland needs to embrace this or get left behind. A powerful way to differentiate SideWinder from Visual Studio .NET would be to enable developers to create .NET GUI applications that can run on both Windows and Linux. This would definitely get my development team to replace Visual Studio .NET with SideWinder. Can you comment on whether SideWinder will support this (e.g. by using Borland.CLX + Mono instead of System.Windows.Forms + the MS .NET SDK)?

"Delphi gives us the continuity to create really stable and easy to install software."That's great! Delphi will continue to provide that for your projects. Not everyone worships at the temple of Delphi. For people who want something else, Borland offers JBuilder for Java-heads, C++Builder for C++ heads, and in the near future, a C# development tool for C# heads. That doesn't affect your use of Delphi, so there's no need to be hostile towards them. These things are not replacements for Delphi, they are siblings. Yes, there is a lot of hype running around out there. Has there ever been a time when the software industry did not suffer from hyped-up over-expectations? The rapidly changing trends you mention are the very reason Borland must constantly seek out new opportunities. Any company that sits still in this industry is dead. Delphi for Win32 is our power base. Delphi for .NET is one opportunity for Borland to grow and evolve. Creating tools for C# development is another opportunity that fits nicely into the Borland palette of software development products.-Danny

Did the development of JBuilder negatively affect Delphi? No.Did the development of C++Builder negatively affect Delphi? No.Did the development of Kylix negatively affect Delphi? No.Will the development of a C# tool at Borland negatively affect Delphi? No.The issues you cite have little to do with Borland creating an additional development product.Personally, I'd love to work on the DBGrid. It's a heck of a lot easier to deal with than the compiler core. However, dbgrid feature work takes a back seat to compiler work. And frankly, grid enhancements don't sell product (unless your product is the grid component). As for the comment about programming by contract, is it reasonable to expect every Borland employee in the world to be fully versed in every aspect of software development? I'm not qualified for that. Are you?-Danny

re: The word is out on SideWinder

I'm interested both in native Delphi and C#. Regarding C#, I love the language (despite that nasty C++/Java syntax), and ADO.NET looks like a better DataSnap.>Why shouldn't Borland sell it's tools to more than one kind of customer? With all my respects for your great work at Borland, Danny, the question should be: will Borland be able to keep the quality for two such unrelated tools? And if we must judge according to the D6 & D7 results, I'm afraid the answer is a big NO, with capital letters. And when I say "unrelated", I mean C# versus native Delphi. It's true that the Delphi's language will benefit from some features ported from the C# world. But the real BIG problem with Delphi right now is the library: Web Services are buggy, reporting is a nightmare, you can work with Midas/DataSnap as long as you renounce to certain features (fetching details on demand, refreshing individual records, etc), DB Express is a no-no beyond simple InterBase functionality, Internet Express has ceased to work since Delphi 5, sockets ... uh, forget it. Even old and trustful controls, such ye olde TDBGrid, are not bug free, and in any case, their look and functionality is long ago outdated. This should be a symptom: I read a thread, a month or so ago, in RAID. One guy asked Borland to implement programming by contract for Delphi. Then, one supposed Borlander complained about "...people asking for functionality they don't even bother to explain..."!!!

re: The word is out on SideWinder

Kylix 3 supports C/C++.As far as C# on Linux killing Delphi, I do not think that it will. Delphi has managed to outlast VB (and I am not talking about VB.NET [a different language]), and the fact that it will be a .NET language will extend its longevity.Personally, I do not think that it as important for Kylix to be taken seriously by Linux developers. I see it as a tool for Windows programmers to easily move into the Linux world, where they are more accustomed to using commercial developer tools. People already entrenched in Linux programming are more likely to use gcc and other open-source tools, tools that they know and trust. Kylix's use will depend on the future growth and popularity of Linux, and not necessarily by winning over existing Linux programmers, assuming that your statement is correct.Just my thoughts, so take them for what they are worth.Thanks.
