I run Norton System Works Pro (with Norton Anti-V, NAV) on WIN-98 and have seen no difficulty while running JBuilder 3.5 Foundation. This system is "misson-critical" for me since I have used it for my MS degree homework and projects - in both JBuilder Found. and C++ Builder.I have not yet used the debugger features at all - only code, compile and run on single projects.I would not be able to comment about NT platforms or about JBuilder Pro.

Thought you would like to share an email I received today from SYMANTEC in response to my enquiry to them. I explained that I was a raw recruit to JBuilder4 and could they help. They kindly responded immediately. Extract below which I hope assists a little.David Morgan."Author: Eddie Manso - Symantec Date: 04:39 pm, Dec 02 PDT Subject: Re: Norton Anti Virus and JBuilder conflict Hello David Morgan , Welcome to Symantec's Discussion Groups for technical support. > > Product: Norton AntiVirus 2000 6.0 for Windows 95/98/NT> Supported operating system: Windows 98> Action: --Other--> Error Message: Not applicable> Summary: Not applicable> > Would you kindly do a little more than you should be asked to do, to> help on this occasion? I feel it could also perhaps benefit> 'Nortons' as well.> > What would be really helpful is if you could suggest some possible> lines of action to try and overcome this problem. Then I could pass> that information on to JBuilder experts and we could all benefit as> follows.> (a) The two products being able to work together OK and overcoming> the only current remedy they can see for the moment. We are aware of this issue. The problem being that it is associated with our Auto-protect device driver 'navap.vxd', and something about Development programs necessitate that they have full access to the system (not surprising).Well, Norton AntiVirus Auto-protect is constantly monitoring in the background for such low-level system accesses. There are a few options that you could change for Norton AntiVirus, and possibly they might alleviate some the issues. How to Disable 'Bloodhound Heuristics':1. Click the 'Options' button in the main interface for Norton AntiVirus.2. On the left hand side, double-click on the word 'Manual Scans'3. This should be opened up, and now click on 'BloodHound'4. On the right side of the screen, uncheck 'Enable BloodHound Heuristics'5. On the left hand side, double-click on the word 'Auto-Protect'6. This should be opened up, and now click on 'BloodHound'7. On the right side of the screen, uncheck 'Enable BloodHound Heuristics'8. Click 'OK'9. Restart your computer. Also, you may want to follow similar instructions to tell Auto-protect to scan 'program-files' only:How to make Auto-protect scan only 'Program Files':1. Open Norton AntiVirus.2. Click Options.3. Click Auto-Protect.4. Under the section titled "File types to scan" click 'Program Files Only'5. Click 'OK'If problems persist, you will have to disable Auto-protect temporarily when you run JBuilder4.0. If this does not resolve the problem, please notify us.To temporarily disable Auto-Protect:1. Right-click the Auto-Protect icon, which is located by the clock on the taskbar.2.Click Disable. A red circle with a slash appears to indicate that Auto-Protect is disabled (until you restart the computer).Thank you for using Symantec's free online technical support. Please come back if there's anything else we can help you with.Eddie MansoSymantec Online Technical Support

Do have patience with me. I am unemployed in the UK and in the last 3 days have begun to study an evaluation copy of JBuilder4 using the Windows 98 platform. In addition I have purchased a study course from 'Referentia' to assist. So I am trying! This is my first communication with the "Community". So the points I make are probably very simplistic and that is why I asked for your patience.I use Norton SystemWorks at home which includes Norton Anti Virus. Below the article I see a patform reference of Windows NT 4.0. Therefore is this the ONLY platform that has the problem please? If the answer to that is YES, could that in itself be a clue as to why Norton Anti Virus is conflicting with JBuilder, the difference BETWEEN the platforms? This has to be a worrying situation for anyone to be in who is studying this product, because particularly on the Internet I thought the use of an Anti Virus product was an absolute "MUST".Will this make the use of "JBuilder" in the future, questionable, because as you can appreciate after my 60 days trial of JBuilder 4 expires I have to consider the big expense for an individual of purchasing the full product?Sorry if I have mis-interpreted how this article began, it is just because I am a newbie! There is a reference to Borland JBuilder 3.x on it too. Perhaps this is how it started? Perhaps you could explain for me.Many thanks to you all for your understanding.David.

I have seen problems with almost *every* anti-virus system and anything that is Java-based. Something about the way virus scanners touch on java files (perhaps JAR files?) upsets the JVM. The most common thing I've seen has been the sudden use of *all* available memory on the system.
