Mark--Yes, Asimov is a good parallel -- I think that's what Petzold was shooting for. Petzold's writing style is somewhat dry compared to Asimov's and he attempted a much more technical book than anything I remember reading in Asimov's remarkable works...JDH

I do not think detailed instructions on how to write a graphical OS are in place in a book dealing with the working of hardware. Most types of computers, even today, do not run graphical OSs (most UNIX based machines, let alone mini's and mainframes are not made to be accessed directly, but are usually used over remote terminals, which may be anything from a high-end PC to a dumb terminal window with no graphics capabilities at all). I think Petzholt may well have been thinking along the same lines, as well as having a maximum set to the number of pages and the time he was allowed to use.

Nice review. I do have one comment:>It is a remarkable accomplishment. Petzold explains computers the >way Aristotle would have: methodically, exhaustively, along a >meticulously planned course from simple ideas to complex concepts. I don't know about Aristotle, but it sounds like Petzold may have explained computers to the layman like Isaac Asimov explained science, mathematics, etc. to the layman. He always started from the beginning and worked his way up to a variable point, determined by the scope of the book, the subject, and his understanding of the subject.
