More on i-mode
Launched in 1999 by NTT DoCoMo in Japan, i-mode is designed to provide
wireless Internet access that not only allows mobile users to browse
the Internet and check e-mail, but also receive online services such as
shopping, banking and ticket reservations. The use of Java has
made it possible for developers to create more robust applications with
enhanced features such as dynamic content transmission, high-speed
multimedia capabilities and advanced security functions.
This has created a variety of new services for both consumers and
enterprises, including real-time stock updates, map search, online game
and, and other transaction-based mobile applications.
i-mode has grown to service more than 40 million subscribers in Japan
and one million outside Japan since its launch four years ago, making
it one the largest mobile Internet services in the world. Today,
i-mode offers a tremendous amount and diversity of content through more
than 72,000 Internet sites in Japan. NTT DoCoMo has built
its global presence for i-mode through alliances with leading mobile
service providers, including E-Plus in Germany, KPN Mobile in the
Netherlands, BASE in Belgium, Bouygues Telecom in France, Telefonica
Moviles in Spain, Wind Telecomunicazioni in Italy, and KG Telecom of
Taiwan.
